The trust was represented by trustee George L. Goodridge III, who opted to receive the prize for the winner in the form of a one-time payment valued at $650,000 before taxes.

The winner had purchased their ticket at Big Y World Class Market in Greenfield, located at 237 Mohawk Trail (Route 2). The Big Y will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the ticket.

Lottery winners are not allowed to remain anonymous in Massachusetts, like they are in other states.

To ensure their name isn’t released publicly, winners must go through the process of creating a trust through the Massachusetts State Lottery for the funds.

The trustee then turns in the ticket and claims the prize on the lottery winner’s behalf, and deposits the prize money into the lottery trust account created for the lottery winner.

This allows for the winner’s name to stay between them and the lottery, and the trustee’s image and name is instead broadcasted to media.

Prizes can be claimed by a trust or other legal entities that fulfill the definition of a legal person,” Massachusetts State Lottery interim Executive Director Mark William Bracken said.

The identity of the trustee or legal representative is made public. Over the last several years, we have seen an increase in the number of large prizes claimed by trusts.

The two largest lottery prizes won in the state of Massachusetts so far in 2023 were $33 million and $31 million Mega Millions jackpot prizes.

The tickets were each sold a week apart, with the $33 million ticket for the Tuesday, Jan. 24 drawing purchased from a Stop & Shop in Belchertown.

The winner came forward to claim the prize on March 1 through the Skylark Group Trust. The $31 million Mega Millions jackpot ticket was won on Jan. 31.

The winning ticket was bought in Woburn from a Gibbs gas station. The winner claimed the prize on March 8 through S & L Trust.
